Fire Prevention Week at Fisher and Barringer Road
Posted Date: 10/08/24 (01:21 PM)
Harry M. Fisher Elementary and Barringer Road Elementary kicked off Fire Prevention Week with special visits from the Mohawk and Ilion Fire Departments. Firefighters rolled in with fire trucks and firefighting gear that quickly captured students' attention. The children laughed with excitement as they neared the fire professionals and their equipment in the parking lots. The real purpose of the day, however, was serious—to share important fire safety tips with Central Valley students.
Among those tips were:
- Make an exit plan—Like schools, every household should have–and practice–a plan to escape in the event of a fire.
- Have at least 2 ways out of a house—Fires can start anywhere, blocking the path to your front door. Make sure you have windows that open, back or side doors, or a fire escape.
- Have a meeting place—Know where everyone will meet after escaping a dangerous situation.
- Stay low—Avoid breathing dangerous smoke by crawling beneath the heat and smoke.
- Stop, drop, and roll—If your clothes catch fire, cover your face with your hands, stop, drop to the ground, and roll across the ground to suffocate the flames.
- Cooking safety tips—Hot stoves and flammable oils and cloths can quickly escalate into a raging fire. A little care in advance can minimize the potential for a dangerous situation.
